ABOUT US

SODIS (short for Solar Water Disinfection) is an initiative of Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Sciences and Technology. For more than 10 years, it has been our mission to provide people in developing countries with access to clean drinking water. Through our work, we are trying to improve the supply of drinking water and reduce infant mortality, and thereby make a direct contribution to the millennium development goals of the UN.

We hope to achieve these goals by spreading the SODIS method that was developed by Eawag researchers. An enthusiastic team in Switzerland provides technical support and high quality project management for SODIS projects in 24 countries. The projects are run by professional local partner organisations. With publicity campaigns, we work to persuade governments and development organisations to commit to ensuring that everyone has access to clean drinking water.

Eawag supports the improvement and spread of the SODIS method through research in microbiology, health, educational strategies and PET bottles. However, the field work in individual SODIS projects is not part of Eawag's core business. This is why the money for promoting the SODIS method must come from donations.
