In the district of Bogandé, a rural area in Burkina Faso, 100 000 people lack access to safe drinking water. Till now, the project was limited to four health centres in this district. Our goal over the next two years is to teach the SODIS method in all 20 health centres in Bogandé.

The project in Burkina Faso focuses on pregnant and breast feeding women. Women and her children belong to the most vulnerable social group. In addition, they are responsible for the water in the household.

Women who are giving birth in a health centre are trained in the use of the SODIS method. Nurses explain the women how to apply the method correctly, but also the importance of hand washing. For their work the nurses have flyers and posters in the local language. The women then bring the method into their families and villages.

The health workers of the villages visit the women regularly during one year. Within the project, so far a total of 150 health workers were trained.

The great potential of this set-up is the permanence of the health centres. The four health centre reaches from now on every year around 2 000 women and will continue with the promotion also after the end of the project.
