  • Training through promoters
  • 50 000 users

Since 2007 SODIS is engaged in the promotion of the method in the region of North-Kivu in Congo. Because of the civil war, the governmental health system has almost completely collapsed. Christian and international organisations have taken over this task as far as possible. The drinking water supply is not guaranteed. Regularly, cholera outbreaks occur.

The project is working in the region of Kasindi, Kamango, Kalivuli and Bahumu. Our partner integrates the training of the population in the SODIS method in their already existing health and HIV/AIDS programme. In the selected villages, promoters explain the SODIS method to the families and show them, how they can improve the hygiene in their households. Regular radio spots remind the people of the importance of clean drinking water and good hygiene.

The last cholera epidemic in the region has shown that the families, who are treating their drinking water with the SODIS method, were mostly spared the illness. This positive experience has increased the number of users among the population and has raised the interest of international organisations.

Now the project aims to intensify the promotion activities in collaboration with other development organisations in Congo.
