We are working since 2007 in the rural area of the Casmance in southern Senegal, and in Keur Massar and Sangalkam, two agglomerations of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Since 2010, we have also started with the dissemination of the SODIS method in the region of Tambacounda. Our project partners in the Casamance integrate the SODIS method and hygiene training in the advanced training of teachers. The teachers then train the school children on the use of the method and sensitise the parents. We also work since 2010 with local promoters in the region of Bignona. The promoters conduct household visits to explain the SODIS method and to introduce general measures of hygiene improvement. Since 2008, we promote the method within the framework of a nutrition programme. Nutrition advisors elucidate the importance of hygiene and clean drinking water to the women of the agglomeration of Dakar. The advisors coach these women over several months. In women’s meetings, they regularly discuss practical approaches on how to improve the health situation of their families. The activities in the Tambacounda region are integrated into a project to improve hygiene and sanitation. Our partners are working here with the CLTS method (Community Led Total Sanitation). This method aims that people themselves improve their sanitation infrastructure and hygiene behaviour. Our
objective is to reach at least 50 000
people by 2011. In the long term, we aim for the official recognition of the
SODIS method by the government and its integration in the curriculum of public
schools. Through partnerships with other development organisations, we strive
to achieve a more widespread dissemination of the SODIS method at national
level.
