In the region of the Koya Rural District, a rural region 40 km away from Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, we successfully introduced the method in 30 village communities. We have now expanded the project to Tombo, a small fishery town. A long term goal is the integration of the SODIS method in the health programme of the government.

Our partner is working with a special method called “Community Led Total Sanitation” (CLTS) to sensitize the village community on the thematic of hygiene. They show the habitants the consequences of poor sanitation. As soon as the population has recognised the need for action in their village, our partner motivates the communities to build toilets on their own initiative and with their own means and to treat their drinking water. Afterwards our partner advises the families on how they can themselves further improve their health situations.

In partnership with Unicef, we introduced the SODIS method in additional 100 communities. Through our advocacy activities, different international organisations started pilot projects in other districts of the country. To ensure a correct implementation of these projects, we intend to train the technical staff of these organisations.
