  • Promotion through Diocese of Ruaha, NGO
  • 4000 users

One out of two families in Tanzania has no access to safe drinking water. A veterinarian at the Diocese of Ruaha started to promote the SODIS method in rural villages around Iringa town a few years ago. By training motivated villagers and supporting them in their function as SODIS promoters, he managed to convince many water users to apply the SODIS method for drinking water treatment. Hotels and safari lodges in the region send their empty bottles to the SODIS project team, and disabled employees of the Neema Craft Centre collect additional bottles in Iringa town.

We have been supporting the Diocese of Ruaha in the promotion of the SODIS method since 2008. Promoters regularly visit villages in the surroundings of Iringa and provide training and counseling to the water users. The training of clergymen of different religious denominations is another channel for the dissemination of information about the SODIS method in a large area.

Furthermore, the project has achieved that patients in the pediatric ward of the provincial hospital - and the people accompanying them - receive training in the application of the SODIS method. Through effective networking and advocacy, the project has also convinced other NGOs and volunteer organizations to promote SODIS in their target areas.

SODIS supports a second project in Tanzania, implemented by Plan International in villages near Daressalam.
