UgandaUganda
In the Kisoro District in the west of Uganda 110 000 people are living without clean drinking water. The purpose of our activities over the next four years is to teach these people how to use the SODIS method. To promote the SODIS method on a national level, we collaborate with other local NGOs and the government. The political situation in Uganda is presently stable. However, of the conflict in the region of Nord-Kivu is clearly noticeable in the project region. Regularly, refugees cross the border to Kisoro. Thereby, diseases spread more than in other regions. The dissemination of the SODIS method is done with the snowball effect. Each trained person has the task, to train neighbours and friends. SODIS committees control the quality of the trainings and conduct information events if necessary. Beside this, there is a close collaboration with schools. Teachers instruct the pupils not only in the SODIS method. Each child also has his or her own two bottles with which he or she treats his drinking water. Each class has a specific place on the school yard to put their bottles. The project has as an objective that the government adopts the SODIS method as an inherent part of the curriculum. Since project start in 2007, about 400 teachers were trained in the SODIS method. 3 SODIS committees monitor the household visits and ensure a high training quality. |
