The prevalence of diarrhea in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea is very high, yet a reliable system for drinking water treatment only exists in the provincial capital, Goroka.

Starting in 2009, we support a small pilot project for the promotion of the SODIS method in the districts of Daulo and Goroka. Our local partner organization, ATprojects Inc., provides training and support in the application of the SODIS method in the framework of an ongoing health project with a focus on people living with HIV/Aids. Promoters will provide training and follow up directly to households through regular visits. The project will also promote the method through 42 schools and 5 health centers.

The project will disseminate the results and insights from the pilot phase with government agencies and a network of NGOs in the country. Radio programs will further enhance the publicity of the method.
